Children's Books and Films as Media for Moral Education

Some Cognitive-Developmentally Orientated Considerations

Christiane Vandenplas-HOLPER

Universite Catholique de Louvain, Belgium

Some experimental studies have shown that story-books for children can enhance their moral development. Moreover cognitive-developmentally orientated teachers have recently discovered literature and fairy-tales as tools for moral education. The author analyses children's media story-books and a film with respect to adult-child relations, sex-role stereotypes, conflict resolution and moral reasoning. Suggestions are also made about how to conduct moral discussions based on the different media presented.
