Promoting a Therapeutic Classroom Climate through Democratic Values

Zipora Shechtman

University of Haifa, Israel

A therapeutic classroom climate is an essential factor in education, related to both the emotional and the cognitive growth of students. It is directly related to student self-concept, motivation to learn and academic outcomes (Butler-Por, 1987; Wittrock, 1986). This paper proposes a classroom intervention programme, based on value clarification theory, which is designed to enhance a therapeutic atmosphere. The rationale underlying the programme is that such a climate is promoted through the enhancement of democratic values.
